Abstract: The synthesis of cross-linked polystyrene (PS) hollow nanospheres (HN) by ultraviolet treatment of the SiO 2-g-PS-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) core-shell hybrids was investigated. The cross-linked PS hollow nanospheres remain unagglomerated and stable in organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF). The cleaved PS and PS-b-PMMA from the silica surfaces were characterized by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was concluded that the solvent-resistant PS hollow nanospheres are potentially useful in applications such as controlled release and enzyme immobilization and as nanoreactors.
