Abstract: A systematic approach of analyzing the qualitative behavior of nonlinear systems is applied to the study of wave-structure interaction problems. An idealized linear oscillator subjected to motion-dependent Morrison-type wave excitations is used to represent the interaction behavior. The effects of several system parameters involved in the system are evaluated and compared. It is demonstrated that, with proper grouping of the system parameters, the problem can be studied systematically. Qualitative analyses based on the bifurcation behavior of the system is shown to be useful tool for studying such complex problems; the results can be effectively presented in the forms of parametric bifurcation diagrams.
