Abstract: Presented herein is a simple numerical method for determining the optimal location of internal restraints, such as braces and internal supports in beams so that their elastic lateral-torsional buckling capacities are maximized. The method consists of a direct search optimization technique and an automated Rayleigh-Ritz method for the buckling analysis. Some examples of braced and internally supported I-beams are considered and their optimal restraint positions determined. The method can be used to solve similar problems of restraint locations optimization for any structural member against bending, buckling or vibration.
