ScholarBank@NUS Repository.||Abstract:||Presented herein is a simple numerical method for determining the optimal location of internal restraints, such as braces and internal supports in beams so that their elastic lateral-torsional buckling capacities are maximized. The method consists of a direct search optimization technique and an automated Rayleigh-Ritz method for the buckling analysis. Some examples of braced and internally supported I-beams are considered and their optimal restraint positions determined.
