At Muka Head Field Station, Penang, Malaysia, observations were made on seedlings of Shorea macroptera (Dipterocarpaceae) and Trema tomentosa (Ulmaceae), a locally common pioneer tree. Shorea seedlings were grown in an area under a large canopy tree and received very little direct sunlight; Trema seedlings were raised beneath a single layer of neutral shade cloth in a more open site. -from Authors
