Abstract: The critical cooling rates for glass formation of four Mg-Ni-Nd alloys are evaluated using differential thermal analysis (DTA). Observed critical cooling rates are found to correlate well with the critical section thickness and the temperature difference between crystallization and glass transition temperatures, in addition to being in good accord with other recent results for easy glass forming La and Zr based alloys. The previously predicted critical cooling rates for Mg65Ni20Nd15Pv are found to be lower than the experimental values indicating that if heterogeneous nucleation are suppressed, a much higher critical thickness for glass formation can be obtained for this alloy.
