Abstract: An on-line examination system based on multiple choice questions is described for the assessment of aptitude in chemistry. Aptitude is assessed in terms of a student's factual, conceptual and analytical skills at the pre-university level. The examination system is designed around a personal computer-based data base environment. A key feature of the system is its ability to generate a test based on a student's previous performance. Details of the system design and implementation are given and integration of the system within a computer-aided learing environment is discussed. © 1989.
