Abstract: A technique has been developed to simulate the inward tunnel lining deformation in centrifuge model tests. The short-term and long-term lateral and axial pile responses due to tunnelling in clay are compared with those obtained from the earlier tests on ovalisation of tunnel lining. The observed pile responses are also evaluated against the measured free field soil movements due to tunnelling using the Particle Image Velocimetry technique. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group.
