Abstract: Tunneling would inevitably induce vertical and lateral soil movements on piles supporting adjacent buildings. In the present study, centrifuge model tests were conducted to evaluate the free-field soil movements due to tunneling and the effects of soil movements on a free-head single pile located nearby. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was also performed to back-analyze the centrifuge test data. The measured and predicted pile responses due to tunneling show fair agreement in both short-term (immediately after tunnel excavation) and long-term. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.
