Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to construct triangular meshes of multi-resolution under shape error control. A dense mesh is firstly constructed from laser scanned cloud data and an unseeded region-growing method is applied to simplify this dense mesh. Subdivision connectivity is achieved by mapping between original mesh and the reduced mesh. With this subdivision structure, the loop-wavelets are applied to construct multiresolutional meshes. The finial mesh is thus obtained such that it possesses the minimum number of points while keeping the shape error between the mesh and the cloud data within a given tolerance. © Professional Engineering Publishing 2004.
