In this paper, we present a new approach to realize sharp 2-D FIR filters using the frequency response masking technique. The synthesis of three common 2-D filters namely the diamond-shaped, fan-shaped and hexagonal-shaped filters are considered. Significant amount of complexity reduction (as compared to direct-form implementation) can be achieved for filters with very narrow transition bands. A design example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach.
