Abstract: The solute-solvent interaction parameters, which characterise the effect of dissolved solute on the vapour liquid equilibrium of solvent mixtures were calculated from the heat of vaporisation of the solvents. The values were found to compare extremely well with those computed from the Antoine equation. Two criteria were developed based on the ratio of the solute-solvent interaction parameters and its relationship with the heat of vaporisation and Antoine constants to facilitate the selection procedure of a suitable solute for the separation of close-boiling and azeotropic mixtures. The criteria were applied to the various solute-solvent systems examined in previous publications and were found to be in good agreement with previous findings.
