Abstract: The investigation presented in this paper is concerned with the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel box columns that are pinned at their ends and subjected to an eccentrically applied load. An effective width formula to account for local buckling and residual stresses is proposed and the formula along with the tangent stiffness method has been used to develop an analytical method for predicting the failure load of box columns. The accuracy of the present method is established by comparing the predicted values of failure loads with the corresponding experimental values and the results are presented in the form of design curves. © 1989.
