Abstract: A rational design method is proposed for reinforced concrete beams with large rectangular openings that are subjected to bending and shear. Twelve beams designed by the proposed method were tested under a point load. The major variables were the length, depth, eccentricity and location of openings and the amount and arrangement of corner reinforcement. Test results indicate that the method is satisfactory. Diagonal bars as corner reinforcement were found to be more effective in crack and deflection control than vertical stirrups. Based on the test results, a suitable quantity of corner reinforcement is recommended.
