Abstract: A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the cracking behaviour of ferrocement under restrained shrinkage conditions. The main parameters investigated were volume fraction of wire mesh and cover. It was found that a higher volume fraction of wire mesh produced more closely spaced cracks with finer crack widths. Specimens with a cover of 6·0 mm exhibited better crack-controlling characteristics under simulated restrained shrinkage tests for a constant volume fraction of wire mesh. Cracking behaviour of ferrocement panels is also affected by the degree of restraint provided by supporting elements. The larger the degree of fixity, the more closely spaced are the cracks produced, with finer crack widths. © 1990.
