Abstract: The effect of monopole length and terminal load on the performance of a 2× 2 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system using compact monopole arrays is rigorously investigated. It is found that the monopole length has a significant effect on the average channel capacity. However, when the monopoles are matched with a conjugate load, the average channel capacity will be almost independent of the monopole length. The terminal loads of the monopoles are also found to significantly influence the average channel capacity. The average channel capacity degrades appreciably when the terminal load is much larger than the self-impedance of the monopoles. © 2009 IEEE.
