Abstract: An attempt is made to study the impact of inventory costs when considering the consolidation strategy. Focus is on the common intuition that consolidation reduces total inventory costs due to the risk pooling effect. It is shown that when the demands are identically and independently distributed (i.i.d), consolidation is an optimal strategy for inventory costs minimization.
