Abstract
This paper argues for a modified version of the incongruity theory of humour and the importance of the experience of humour when discussing theories of humour. The new version of incongruity theory posited here emphasises the necessity of resolution of incongruity and the paratelic state (or state of play) placed on a scale. The role of intention and the type/token distinction in the creation of humour are discussed. The experience of humour is examined in relation to the creation of humour. Humour appreciation without enjoyment, factors for evaluating humour, and special characteristics of humour tokens are considered. This paper counters existing objections to incongruity theory and illustrates the link between the creation of humour and the experience of humour. Humour cannot be discussed with these two aspects in isolation, and including the experience of humour enriches a theory of humour.
