Abstract
There are two strong forces that are shaping our cities today. First is the density and second is the urbanization. More cities are now moving towards high-density because of its population growth with more trends encouraging the urbanization. As the result, higher and more compact developments are becoming inevitable, so as the living environment. The choice to build the urban housing vertically has happened to be the most reasonable option. This research is a study on the sustainable approach that has been set forward by the recent vertical urban housings. Using the Singapore’s public housing as case studies to examine the urban housing performance in the tropical context, this research attempts to share the current experience and knowledge regarding the sustainable urban housing issue. There are five main criteria of the sustainable frameworks, which are observed in this research; accessibility, diversified use of space, increased density, park and open space, and also the adding value to the site vibrancy. The main findings, however, have shown that even though most of the vertical urban housings have been built in accordance to the sustainable frameworks, there is still a lack of attention in responding the actual environment, which in this study is the tropical context. The fact that designing vertical urban housing requires a balance between its internal development and its external contribution rather than to a one-way path towards a high-density living is the argument we must address. Nevertheless, this five-chapter research will only open some critical point of view on how the vertical urban housing performs best in the city. Of course, there are other approaches that the study may take a concern to and there is a room for improvement on the methodological level. Nevertheless, the initial idea to designing the city towards sustainability remains prominent for us as planners and urban design architects to pursue.
