Abstract
This thesis is an investigation into the machine. By machine, it looks specifically at apparatus that is composed with various remote components into a single unit to perform a prescribed activity.
Singapore as a country reflects the idea of the machine. It is well run and a distinctly “coming together” of various remote components that can be seen as the 17 different ministries that organize and support the country of Singapore. Each ministry has its own portfolio and agenda that espouses its functions in relation to the state.
The project distilled five distinct agendas of Singapore: #1 Make Time. #2 Make Space. #3 Make Place. #4 Make Noise. #5 Make Love. It is apparent that the Singapore Machine operates on these five manifestoes.
It is a common understanding that the only resources Singapore has had in its decades of development were human resources. If Singapore is the machine with its ministries as interconnected gears contained within, education becomes the grease to lubricate the operation of the machine.
By education, the public would have knowledge and access to how the entire machine runs. Hence this architecture is a consolidation of all these ministries and heir portfolios into one container. Its purpose is a repackaging of the roles and functions of all the 17 ministries into a single point of dissemination to educate the public on the machine’s role and to propagate its value and relevance to the country and people for generations to come. It will exhibit the mission statements of all the ministries and show how all of these components work seamlessly together for the smooth operation of the machine.
