Abstract: This paper highlights the position of education in the context of technological advancement, contemporary society, and the current problems faced by our planet. It will critically question the fundamental meaning of knowledge transfer from the present to the next generations: whether it is just about skill or essentially about ethics; and whether generalist is better than specialist. The importance of humanities to shape the ethical positions of students, parallel to the training to develop skills and intellectual knowledge will be highlighted; and how the ideal profile of scholars in modern society today needs to be produced and nurtured by the academic institutions, and any difficulties that may be faced in order to achieve these ideals.
