Abstract
Green areas are important elements in enhancing the quality of life in Singapore. As
they are usually considered to be land parcels that are non-economically contributing to
society, there is always the problematic issue of whether parks or open spaces are really
being put to highest and best use. In addition, with Singapore's land constraints, there is
always competition between various land uses.
This study thus seeks to determine whether green areas such as parks play an
important role in young Singaporeans' lives, in other words, to see if greenery helps in
enhancing their quality of living environment. Existing park areas are also evaluated using
satisfaction levels of these Singaporeans. Finally, this study seeks to determine what can be
added to green areas so as to enhance one's satisfaction.
It has been found that most respondents were generally satisfied with park areas.
Accessibility and safety were the elements that yielded higher satisfaction levels. Only
certain items such as maintenance and comfort were not as satisfying. Some popular
suggestions to be added to green areas included exercising equipment, cycling tracks and
barbecue corners
In general, this study has helped to identify which park elements should be given
added attention. Hence, this study will be useful as a gauge to what can be done to enhance
the intrinsic "value" of green areas in Singapore.
