Abstract: Cinemas are one of the more land-intensive form of recreation that are found in nearly all sufficiently populated areas. As such, they form an integral part of most cityscapes. In Singapore, cinemas have generally been relatively resilient although a number have been converted to other uses or closed down during periods of low patronage. Recently, there has been a trend to build smaller cinemas in clusters within shopping centres and to split conventional cinemas into smaller auditoriums for operational efficiency. This has led to a change in urban landscape and a different perception of mixed use developments or shopping centres, where cinemas may form an essential user of complexes to draw in the crowds. This is a feasibility study of multiplex movie theatres, in general, illustrated with a case study.
