Abstract
Current theories imply that the emotion of awe increases cognitive processing capacity, suggesting the hypothesis that awe predicts an enhanced ability to solve complex problems requiring creative insight. The present research examined this through a cross-sectional study (Study 1) and two experimental studies (Studies 2 and 3). In all studies, measurement of awe was followed by performance on an insight problem solving task for 20 minutes. Study 3 further measured flow experiences occurring during task performance. Across the three studies, awe predicted insight as demonstrated from a statistically-significant pooled effect from a meta-analysis of the findings. In addition, Study 3 found that the enhanced flow experiences brought about by awe mediated this relationship. The theoretical and practical implications of leveraging on awe to yield valuable insight occurrences are discussed.
