Abstract: On June 18, 2019, Facebook announced that it was working on ‘Libra’ a digital currency, and ‘Calibra’, a digital wallet to store the currency for transactions. It also announced that it was doing this with a set of 27 other companies and organisations as founding partners. The launch did not go down well with regulators, owing to Facebook’s leadership of the project and given how it was deemed to have failed users on privacy issues previously and distorting social and political discourse.
