Abstract: Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending grew rapidly across the globe in the 21st century. In theory, it seemed like an excellent way to help the poorest in society. In practice, it often led to rampant fraud, massive defaults and spiraling interest rates. Why did some countries’ P2P markets survive while others collapsed?
