Abstract
The purpose of the dissertation is to evaluate the sports
facilities available at the Sports and Recreational Centre
of the National University of Singapore, Kent Ridge Campus.
The centre was built four years ago as part of the Master
Plan of the whole campus. It was designed for a population
of 9,000 students with a low capacity for expansion. The
population has now increased by 50% and many students have
been complaining of a shortage of facilities.
Part of the evaluation involves investigating into the
adequacy of the facilities in terms of both quality and
quantity. In addition to evaluating the facilities per se,
the importance of other attributes of the sports complex is
also examined.
The evaluation is based on student users' feedback obtained
through two surveys. The first survey is a campus-wide one,
measuring the extent of usage of the facilities. The second
follow-up survey probes into further details of the
problems of the sports complex. Results showed that though the number of students has
increased significantly, the demand for more facilities is
confined only to the more popular facilities like the
squash courts, the tennis courts and the swimming pool.
The two facilities with the worst conditions are the
badminton courts and the weight-lifting equipment. Most of
the other facilities are in fair conditions.
Recommendations made are prioritized in order of importance
based on the level of usage of the facility and level of
importance of attributes as rated by the users. Wide range
of facilities and availability at the right time are two
factors considered very important to the users.
