Abstract: The ancient practices of 'Lan' (orchids) cultivation in China are reviewed, particularly those cultural methods widely practised during the Song (960-1279 AD) and Ming (1368-1644 AD) dynasties. These practices are examined in the light of our recent understanding of the physiology and horticultural practices of orchids. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
