ClayStation: A mixed reality gaming platform supporting playful learning for children
    (2011) Wang, X.; Cheok, A.D.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
This paper presents a novel mixed reality gaming platform for children, ClayStation, which aims to promote physical play, creativity and playful learning. Users can create their own unique characters and scenes in the game using real clay, and alter their characteristics in real time. This flexibility stimulates imagination, enables users to have more control and allows them to customize their gaming experience more easily. In this paper, we present the design of the system, and discuss its potential in supporting playful learning. Copyright 2011 ACM.

Internet-enabled user interfaces for distance learning
(2009-01) Liu, W.; Teh, K.S.; Peiris, R.; Choi, Y.; Cheok, A.D.; Charissa, L.M.-L.; Theng, Y.-L.; Huynh Duy Nguyen, T.; Cong Thien Qui, T.; Vasilakos, A.V.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTE; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
The advent of Internet technologies since decades ago has propelled distance learning drastically. In this modern world, knowledge develops so fast that the amount of intellectual information that needs to be learnt before it becomes obsolete again is so huge. Distance learning through the use of Internet technologies has the advantage of being able to get across the information to the students remotely and effortlessly. The other advantage, which is the main focus of this paper, is that students are able to learn from their instructors on an entirely new media platform - the Internet-enabled and tangible user interface. This paper discusses how to use two main new media: multi-modal Internet technologies, namely remote physical interface and remote augmented reality technology in distance learning. © 2009, IGI Global.

Connected online and offline safe social networking for children
    (2011-07) Abeyrathne, D.; Edirisinghe, C.; Ranasinghe, N.; Karunanayaka, K.; Zhu, K.; Peiris, R.L.; Fernando, O.N.N.; Cheok, A.D.; Lan, L.; Morisawa, Y.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTE; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
Children today are more connected and active on the Internet. Their extensive use of online social networks, which ultimately could have perplexing effects on the recognition of their identity and personality, has caused grave social concerns. In addition there is a lack of actual physical communication among children due to their preoccupation with the online self. To address these issues, an interactive robotic toy called Petimo was developed. We believe this introduction of new physical dimension improves safety and enjoyment of children in the social networking arena. As a proof-of-concept, a 3D virtual world called Petimo World is developed. It incorporates basic features of traditional online social networks to provide childern collaborative interaction and enjoyment with their friends. The concept of Petimo could be extended to any social network to create childerns applications to promote physical interaction and enhance enjoyment and safety issues in social networks. © 2011 ACM.

Huggy pajama: A mobile parent and child hugging communication system
    (2008) Keng, J.; Teh, S.; Cheok, A.D.; Peiris, R.L.; Choi, Y.; Thuong, V.; Lai, S.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTE; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
Huggy Pajama is a novel wearable system aimed at promot- ing physical interaction in remote communication between parent and child. This system enables parents and children to hug one another through a novel hugging interface device and a wearable, hug reproducing pajama connected through the Internet. The hugging device is a small, mobile doll with an embedded pressure sensing circuit that is able to accurately sense varying levels of the range of human force produced from natural touch. This device sends hug signals to a haptic jacket that simulates the feeling of being hugged to the wearer. It features air pockets actuating to reproduce hug, heating elements to produce warmth that accompanies hug, and color changing pattern and accessory to indicate distance of separation and communicate expressions. in this paper, we present the system design of Huggy Pajama. Culture computing: Interactive technology to explore culture
    (2010) Cheok, A.D.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
The present day rapid development of media science and digital technology is offering the modern generation more opportunities as well as challenges as the new fundamental literacy. Therefore, to reach the modern generation on issues such as an appreciation of cultures, we have to find common grounds based on digital media technology. In an increasingly hybrid cultural environment, interaction and fusion of cultural factors with the computer technology will be an investigation into the possibilities of providing an experience into the cultures of the world, operating in the environments the modern generation inhabits. Research has created novel merging of traditional cultures and literature with recent media literacy. Three cultural computing systems, Media Me, BlogWall and Confucius Computer, are presented in this chapter. Studies showed that users gave positive feedback to their experience of interacting with cultural computing systems. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

    Kawaii/cute interactive media
    (2010) Cheok, A.D.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
Cuteness in interactive systems is a relatively new development, yet having its roots in the aesthetics of many historical and cultural elements. Symbols of cuteness abound in nature as in the creatures of neotenous proportions; drawing in the care and concern of the parent and the care from a protector. We provide an in depth look at the role of cuteness in interactive systems beginning with a history. We particularly focus on the Japanese culture of Kawaii, which has made a large impact around the world, especially in entertainment, fashion, and animation. We then take the approach of defining cuteness in contemporary popular perception. User studies are presented offering an in-depth understanding of key perceptual elements which are identified as cute. This knowledge provides for the possibility to create a cute filter which can transform inputs and automatically create more cute outputs. The development of cute social computing and entertainment projects are discussed as well, providing an insight into the next generation of interactive systems which bring happiness and comfort to users of all ages and cultures through the soft power of cute. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

Foodie: Play with Your Food Extend social cooking game with novel edible interface
    (2011) Wei, J.; Cheok, A.D.; Martinez, X.R.; Tache, R.; Zhu, Q.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
We present Foodie, a novel approach that extends digital cooking games to the real edible food, connecting digital playfulness with active participation in food preparation and eating experience. Through this system, people can not only create their special pattern for food and share with remote family members or friends in the digital environment, but also serve them with the emulated real edible food. Taking one step beyond the current digital cooking games, this system adds another natural dimension-the edible food with smell and taste, to enhance the lifelike feeling of virtual cooking, even remotely. The intuitive but engaging interface also provides an attractive channel for kids to creatively learn about cooking in a safe, realistic and playful way. © 2011 IEEE.

Sensorless rotor position estimation algorithm for switched reluctance motors using fuzzy logic
    (2001) Wang, Z.; Cheok, A.D.; Wee, L.K.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING
A fuzzy logic based sensorless rotor position estimation scheme with high accuracy is described. An optimized fuzzy motor model with compact rules was used to calculate the rotor position from the current and and flux waveforms. A fuzzy logic based optimal phase selector and predictive filter were implemented to improve the estimation accuracy. The simulation and experimental results showed high accuracy.
