dc.description.abstract | The taxonomy of the South-east Asian catfish genus Acrochordonichthys (Akysidae) is revised. The shapes of the snout, humeral process and adipose fins are diagnostic species characters. Only four out of 11 species and one sub-species described prior to this study are considered valid, namely A. rugosus (Bleeker, 1847), A. ischnosoma Bleeker, 1858, A. chamaeleon (Vaillant, 1902), and A. pachyderma Vaillant, 1902. An additional five new species (A. guttatus, A. septentrionalis, A. mahakamensis, A. strigosus and A. falcifer) are described. © 2001 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles. | |
