Abstract: A hydrogenase was isolated from a unicellular and non-nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa strain NIES 44. The enzyme was easily solubilized and was capable of evolving hydrogen gas in the presence of reduced methyl viologen and benzyl viologen. The enzyme was stimulated by divalent ions and showed a pH optimum around 6.8. The Mr of the enzyme, estimated by gel filtration, was 50 000. © 1987.
