Abstract: A wide range of coupled map lattices is found to have identical pattern sequences providing numerical evidence for their universality in the class of systems studied. It is furthermore found that the wave-type solutions of the diffusively coupled logistic lattice scale linearly with the coupling range indicating the existence of a continuum limit. The findings are used to introduce a very simple type of spatially extended map that can serve as a representative for the pattern sequence of this class of coupled maps. © 2002 The American Physical Society.
