Abstract: Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry was used to elucidate the composition of reaction products formed on Cr, Cu, Fe, Zn and Zr. Water, oxygen and their mixtures were exposed to the metals and based on the emission of various oxygen and hydrogen containing species possible reaction routes are considered. It is shown that only an ideal dry oxidation gives a reaction product of the form MexOy. © 1990.
