Abstract: The decomposition, addition, and polymerization pathways of naphthalene oxidation over 1 % Pt/γ-Al2O3 and 5% Co/γ-Al2O3 catalysts are discussed based on the relative concentration of intermediates found in this study along with a review of various reaction mechanisms. The identified intermediates were classified in three categories; (1) naphthalene-decomposed products, (2) naphthalene- derivatives, and (3) polymerized polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC).
