Abstract: Carbon supported platinum nanoparticles were prepared by rapid microwave (MW) heating of ethylene glycol solutions of H2PtCl6 in the presence of XC-72 carbon. The Pt loading was varied in the range of w = 10%-20%. It was found that Pt nanoparticles have uniform shape and size with an average diameter of 3.6 nm, which could exist in high dispersion on the XC-72 carbon surface. Electrochemical measurements showed that the microwave-prepared Pt/C catalyst exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity in methanol, oxidation than Pt/C catalyst prepared by using KBH4 as the reducing agent or commercial E-TEK Pt/C catalyst.
