Abstract: Nano-ZrO2 particulates containing magnesium nanocomposites were synthesised using blend press sinter hot extrusion technique. Microstructural characterisation showed reasonably uniform distribution of reinforcement, significant grain refinement of magnesium matrix, and the presence of minimal porosity. Mechanical testing revealed that the presence of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement leads to improvement in microhardness and 0-2% yield strength, and significant increase in ductility and work of fracture of magnesium matrix. Fracture surface of Mg matrix exhibited mixed mode (brittle ductile) fracture in the cases of Mg-ZrO2 nanocomposites. © 2007 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
