In this article, the large anisotropy and strong coupling between rare-earth (RE=Sm, Dy, Tb etc.) metal and transition metal (TM=Co, Fe, etc.) are proposed to be utilized to improve the thermal stability (K uV */k BT) and coercivity (H c) of high-density recording media. The effects of Dy doping, which was added to the Cr underlayer and Cr overcoat layer, on magnetic and reversal properties are presented. It was found that Dy doping in the Cr 1-xDy x underlayer and overcoat layer resulted in an increase of the K uV */k BT and coercivity (H c). The appreciable increases in K uV */k BT and H c indicate that Dy doping into the underlayer and intermediate layer is promising for the preparation of high-density recording media. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
