Abstract: Deprotonation of functional salicylaldimines with NaH invariably results in cubane or double-cubane Na(i) aggregates which transmetallate with Ni(ii) under different stoichiometric conditions to give Ni(ii) complexes that are catalytically active towards ethylene oligomerisation.
