Abstract: In this paper the retention behavior of ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography was examined. Considerations of the molecular weight and the length to breadth ratio, which have been used extensively for the description of retention behavior of PAH in HPLC, was found to be inadequate for explaining the retention mechanism fully. By taking into account the effects of intramolecular steric strain and non-planarity, a better description of the retention behavior could be obtained.
