The benzene rings of polystyrene (PS) were iodinated to various extents. Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) was found to be miscible with iodinated PS (IPS) samples with degrees of iodination of 6. 15, 27, 38 and 47% but immiscible with an IPS sample having a degree of iodination of 61%. As compared with other halogens, the ability of iodine in PS to induce immiscibility in PPO/PS blends is about the same as that of fluorine but better than those of chlorine and bromine. PS was found to be miscible with IPS samples with degrees of iodination of 6 and 15%. The results were used to calculate two segmental interaction parameters. © 1989.
