The design and implementation of a graphics and natural language interface for a cybernetic analytical instrument are described. A novel feature of the design is the way the symbolic representation of active elements of the experiment is integrated with their functional and procedural characteristics by using a Prolog-based frame formalism. The graphics and natural language interface obviates the need for any programming knowledge on the part of the user. Further, it enables the user to dynamically interact with the experiment in real time. © 1989 American Chemical Society.
