Abstract: Bonding of silicone sealant to aluminum, cold rolled steel, copper and glass was investigated in relation to the shear strengths of their lap joints. Surface pretreatment for aluminum and cold-rolled steel improved the bonding in varying degrees. Bond durability of silicone/metal composites was monitored after immersion in water and exposure to the equatorial environment. The joint failure and its possible failure mechanisms for these composites are discussed.
