A procedure for tuning simultaneously the primary and secondary controllers of cascade control systems is proposed. The method is based on a single dynamic test (such as a step or pulse change in set point) conducted with both loops closed. Computation of the optimum controller settings from the resulting transients via frequency response is illustrated by means of a simulation example.
