dc.description.abstractThis paper briefly reviews the application of geometric modelling and analysis systems in the design of offshore structures. Two recent projects are then described to highlight the engineering design and associated applications of three dimensional geometric modelling (3D CAD) and finite element analyses. A design for living quarter modules, using exterior diagonalised X-bracings, which reduces fabrication costs is reported. The modelling and design of a support structure for fabrication of bottle-legs (skirt pile groups) is then illustrated. The engineering considerations that led to the adopted design schemes are highlighted to emphasize the complimentary roles of CAD systems and experienced designers. The management issues with regards to project control and utilisation of CAD systems for the multi-disciplinary design team are discussed. The potential of automated finite element analysis and intelligent CAD systems for offshore design is outlined. An ideal environment is an integrated system which can accommodate all phases of the project life cycle resulting in better and more economic structures for the oil industry.
