Abstract: The thickness, the average density, the mass flux, the density distribution, and the thermal conductivity of frost formed on a vertical tube under free convection have been measured. The gamma ray attenuation technique is used for the density measurements. A closed form expression is obtained for the average density in terms of the measured intensity ratio. Two methods for solving the Abel integral equation for the density distribution are investigated. Results are obtained for the time variation of the properties under different ambient conditions.
