Abstract: Road engineers have been concerned with the stripping of bituminous coating from the surface of aggregates in bituminous pavements. An investigation was carried out to determine the relative effects of different fillers in the control of the stripping. The filler used for this purpose must be able to increase the adhesive bond between the aggaregate and the bitumen and also be able to strengthen the bituminous film so that it can take more deformation before breaking. The paper describes the details of the investigation and discusses the results, emphasizing the point that filters do play an important influence on stripping problem. The study has indicated that among the various fillers used in the investigation, cement is found an effective control, whereas sulphur is found to encourage the stripping action. Refs.
