Abstract: A new nanocomposite containing ball milled Al-CNT reinforcement was fabricated through powder metallurgy route using microwave assisted rapid sintering technique followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization revealed reasonably uniform distribution of ball milled Al-CNT particles in the matrix and significant grain refinement in the nanocomposite. Compared to monolithic Mg, the Mg/1.0Al-0.18CNT nanocomposite exhibited higher 0.2%YS, UTS, tensile failure strain and WOF (+68%, +36%, +42% and +125%, respectively). Inclusive of crystallographic texture changes, the effect of Al and CNT integration on the enhancement of mechanical properties of Mg is discussed in this paper. Copyright © 2010 MS&T'10®.
