Abstract: A robust and precise medical device is important for blood glucose regulation. We have developed a prototype device to regulate blood glucose. The device is composed of four subsystems: measuring subsystem, pumping subsystem, controller subsystem and power subsystem. Each subsystem plays an important part in the development of an intelligent implantable regulation system of blood glucose. An insulin controller is suggested for the prototype device as well as a proportional derivative (PD) controller of insulin secretion by the pancreas. The results of preliminary experiments demonstrate the potential to achieve robust regulation of blood glucose using the artificial pancreas. Further improvements on control algorithm and electromechanical hardware will be required for a clinical viable solution. © 2010 IEEE.
