Abstract: The performance of a feedback linearised (FBL) controller is compared with a 3 loop proportional plus integral (PI) controller for the speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The performance of each controller is evaluated by studying the transient speed response to step changes in reference speed. A flux weakening algorithm is adopted to compare the performance of each controller during operation in the highly non-linear constant power region. The sensitivity of each controller to changes in motor parameters is investigated. A discrete time implementation of the FBL controller is simulated. The effect of inaccuracy in the estimation of the rotor acceleration on the performance of the FBL controller is discussed. A speed and load torque observer is simulated for estimation of the speed and acceleration and the performance of the digital FBL controller with this observer is predicted.
