This paper describes the selection of a practical method for estimating fractal dimensions of textured images. The methods due to Sarkar and Chaudhuri [2], Peleg et al. [3], and Jin et al. [7] are compared in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Experiments show that the method due to Jin et al. [7] with its scale limit criterion performs best. It is then used to characterize the severity of damage in kidney tissue sections.
