Consideration is given to the application of expert system methodologies in real-time process control. The benefits and advantages of separating controller numerical algorithms from its operational heuristic logic are evaluated. In particular, expert system techniques are used where the heuristic logic is implemented as a knowledge base for real-time process control. A simple prototype expert control system is implemented in the authors' investigations.
